2012 Toyota Prius Plug-In

You Say You Want An Evolution?

2012 Toyota Prius Plug-In

Here's a game that the first people who buy the 2012 Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid should play with their other Prius-driving friends: Let them slide behind the wheel and see if they can even tell that it isn't a standard, third-generation Prius. Very few will be able to tell. That's how subtle the changes are between the two vehicles, at least, to someone who isn't looking too closely. After driving the corded Prius in California recently, we can confidently say that from both the outside and behind the wheel, the Prius Plug-in Hybrid looks, drives and feels pretty much like any other example of the world's most popular hybrid. Of course, this Prius does receive some important advances - ones that hardcore fans will notice them right away - but it's more than obvious that Toyota's strategy with its new model is evolution, not revolution.

The changes start with the plug-in's new lithium-ion battery pack. Much smaller than the packs used in the two most popular plug-in vehicles on the market, the Prius Plug-in's 176-pound, 4.4-kWh battery pack offers just enough juice, Toyota says, for an "electric-only driving range of up to 15 miles at a maximum speed of 62 mile-per-hour" (More on how this isn't exactly true after the jump).

Should Toyota's rumored Supra revival look like this?

Toyota Supra Rendering

The rumormill is churning full blast at the thought of a resurrected Toyota Supra, and while we don't have any more reliable information on whether or not Toyota will reintroduce the high-horsepower sports car, we have been treated to a rendering of what the vehicle might look like.

Artist Andreas Fougner took the time to stretch his skills over the notion of a Supra successor, and the result is the machine you see above. Fougner says that he drew his inspiration from both current and vintage Toyota models, as well as other vehicles that have made the jump from past to present while skipping a generation or two.

What's under the hood? Fougner hasn't bothered with specifics, though he did say that the modern Supra would need to be light and nimble, despite the vehicle's portly past, and that it should come with a high-revving, naturally aspirated beating heart. Forced induction would also be acceptable.

As for us, we wouldn't mind seeing a torque-happy straight six under that long hood, so long as it puts power to the rear wheels via an honest-to-God manual gearbox.

Toyota unveils Tacoma TRD T|X Baja Series Limited Edition in Texas

2012 Toyota Tacoma TRD T/X Baja Series

Ford took everyone by surprised when it unveiled the F-150 SVT Raptor back in 2008, not only with the truck's capability but by the fact that they had the guts to produce it at all. The success of the Raptor left other automakers scrambling to produce something similar, although everything yet has fallen short in one way or another. Chrysler unveiled the Ram Runner Concept at SEMA last year, although you have to build it yourself if you want one, and GM has merely teased the idea of producing the Sierra All Terrain HD Concept shown earlier this year.

Now, Toyota is stepping up to the plate with the Tacoma TRD T|X Baja Series. Unveiled today at the Texas State Fair, this limited-edition truck takes inspiration from Toyota's Baja racing history and features items like an electronically-controlled locking differential, TRD off-road package with Bilstein race shocks and an increased ride height of two inches, BF Goodrich T/A KO tires and bead-lock style wheels. Power comes from Toyota's 4.0-liter V6 and both a six-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission are available.

The TRD T|X Baja Series also benefits from changes made to the standard Tacoma for 2012, including a restyled front end with a new hood, grille, front bumper and headlights. The interior gets a new instrument panel, updated gauges, new steering wheel and more. You can read full details about both the standard Tacoma and the limited edition Baja Series in the press release after the jump.

Toyota goes creepy with new Prius People Person commercial

Toyota Prius ad people person

In the latest Prius family commercial by Toyota, actual actors, loads of computer animation and a miniature set combine to create the illusion of a Godzilla-sized man made of people. He then steps out of his house to find that his Toyota Prius has morphed into four vehicles: a regular Prius, Prius V, Prius C concept and Prius Plug-In. This is the end of Mr. People Person, as he quickly disintegrates, leaving only his size-bazillion shoes and a bunch of little people behind.

Toyota's narrative behind its Prius People Person ad states:
Not long ago, there was one model of Prius for everyone to share. But now that one Prius has become a family: There's one for everyone. There's the original one, the bigger one, the smaller one and the one that plugs in. They're all a little different, just like us.
We'd say the spot makes sense conceptually, but it's a bit over the top, and creepy to boot. See it for yourself after the jump and let the disintegration begin.

728-hp Toyota Camry is the ultimate sleeper

dynamotorsports toyota camry

A sleeper is any vehicle that appears to be slow, but is hiding an evil secret in its engine bay. Sleepers are scintillating machines that prove time and skill (and money) can turn a garden variety family sedan or station wagon into a street rocket ready to tackle those with far more cash to burn.

Take this Toyota Camry, for example - it just received a new lease on life courtesy of Canadian tuner Dynamotorsports. Under the hood sits a 3.0-liter V6 engine fitted with custom intake and exhaust manifolds, a big ol' HKS turbo and a whole lot of boost. The end result: a Camry that puts down 728 horsepower - at the wheels.

We imagine that mashing the gas results in a display of torque steer that would make Hercules weep as his arms thrash from side to side. Still, this is one Camry we would love to spend some time with, if only for a good laugh. Click past the jump to watch it attack a dyno.

Toyota Ku:Rin snags compressed air top speed record with 80.3 mph run

KU:RIN

Developed by a subsidiary of Toyota Motors called Toyota Industries Corp., the arrow you see above is the three-wheeled Ku:Rin. Powered by compressed air, the Ku:Rin showcases Toyota's expertise in developing compressors for automotive air conditioning systems.

Recently, the Ku:Rin prototype hit the track at Japan Automobile Research Institute's test facility in search of a speed record for compressed air vehicles. The Ku:Rin's posted top speed of 80.3 miles per hour should be enough to rocket it into the record books, and Toyota says it will submit the results to Guinness World Records.

Power for the Ku:Rin comes from a reversed A/C compressor that generates energy from the expansion of compressed air, while the vehicle's on-board compressed air tanks serve as "fuel." Though 80 mph seems reasonable, the Ku:Rin's two-mile total range is laughable. This thing may be fast, but talk about range anxiety.

Toyota expands Venza model line to three trims for 2012

2012 Toyota Venza

Before, there was just one Toyota Venza. Oh sure, you could boost the equipment and outfitting by ordering option packages, but since its launch, the Venza has not carried a suffix. For 2012, Toyota is changing its strategy and now there are Venza LE, XLE and Limited trim levels for buyers to choose between.

The LE starts it off, and it gets cushier and better-equipped from there with the XLE and Limited, though even in the base model, you won't find a Venza without a six-disc changer, Bluetooth, and USB and auxiliary input. The top-dog Limited is a leather-lined, V6-powered box of rock thanks to a JBL Synthesis surround-sound audio system. Navigation, panorama roof, automatic high-beams are some other highlights. In between, the XLE covers the middle ground with a whole bunch of optional choices.

The changes add a new bit of shorthand to the Venza that makes it easy to pick out the sybarites from the skinflints. Toyota thinks the move brings the Venza in line with its other products and makes choosing more convenient for buyers. The full press release is after the jump.

Toyota coupe range expanding with Supra successor, CT200h coupe, LFA Tokyo edition

Toyota FT-HS Concept

Toyota was once an automaker known for its two-door sportscars and coupes. There was the Celica. There was the Supra. There was the Lexus SC. But while those have all long since departed, the Japanese auto giant is clawing its way back to the territory it once owned.

The Lexus LFA is one heck of a first salvo, and the FT-86 is around the corner. There's a world of space between those models, though, and according to the latest reports, Toyota is planning to fill that space, too.

Rumor has it that, while not officially sanctioned, a team of engineers is working on a rear-drive successor to the Supra, though where the project stands and what future it may have remain big question marks. A second front-drive luxury hybrid coupe is also tipped to be in the works from Lexus, adopting much of its underpinnings from the CT200h.

Before those arrive, though, we look upwards to the LFA. The convertible version has reportedly been postponed if not axed entirely, but word has it that a special edition is to be presented at and named for the Tokyo Motor Show. The model would reportedly be distinguished by bare carbon-fiber panels for the roof and spoiler and a significant price premium over the stock model.

2012 Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid returns 112 MPGe

Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid

At the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, Toyota peeled back the sheets to finally reveal its 2012 Prius Plug-in production model.

Toyota describes the plug-in hybrid as the "greenest, most technically advanced Prius yet," and with an electric-only driving range of 14.3 miles, fuel consumption targeted at 112 miles per gallon equivalent and CO2 emissions listed at 49 grams per kilometer, we're inclined to agree with the Japanese automaker's bluster.

Unlike currently available Prius hatchbacks, the plug-in version is rechargeable using an electrical connection, rather than only from electricity generated while the vehicle is in motion. Toyota says that after the Prius Plug-in's 4.4-kWh lithium-ion battery pack is depleted, the vehicle seamlessly switches to hybrid mode. The Prius Plug-in can be fully recharged in less than 1.5 hours.

On the performance front, the plug-in Prius cranks out 134 horsepower, which Toyota says is sufficient to propel the hybrid hatch from nought to 62 miles per hour in a leisurely 10.7 seconds and onward to a top speed of 112 mph.

Toyota says sales of the Prius Plug-in will start in early 2012 - mainly in Japan, the U.S and Europe - and anticipates annual volume of 50,000 units. The Japanese automaker has yet to announce pricing for the 2012 plug-in, but some reports claim the automaker is targeting a sub-$30,000 price tag.

Hit the jump to read Toyota's zillion-word release detailing the world's most technically advanced Prius and be sure to check out our live shots from Frankfurt in the high-res image gallery.

Toyota Plug-in Prius priced at $32,000* and Prius V to start at $26,400*

2012 Toyota Prius Plug-In

The Prius Plug-in Hybrid has a price: $32,000. That's the just-announced MSRP for the base plug-in hybrid, with the top-of-the-line Prius Plug-in Hybrid Advanced jumping all the way up to $39,525. Because the both of these Prius Plug-in models have a 4.4-kWh, 176 pound battery pack, it should qualify for a federal tax credit of $2,500. Toyota has also announced that the larger Prius V, which does not qualify for any tax incentives, will start at $26,400. *All vehicles are subject to a $760 delivery fee.

Toyota says the plug-in Prius will be available in 14 western and East Coast states next spring and in all 50 states in 2013. The Japanese automaker is predicting 15,000 sales in the first full year and the Prius family could eventually be the company's best-selling nameplate once all members are on sale - presuming overall hybrid sales increase.

Recently, Toyota announced a partnership with Leviton to provide charging stations. Today, Toyota said that it will offer Leviton's 16 Amp, Level 2 charging station for $999 (including installation), starting in early October. Starting next month, Toyota will start taking reservations for the Prius Plug-in at its website next month. Starting some time later today, you can watch a video about how to order a Prius Plug-in over at the official site.

So, how 'bout it: does a plug-in Prius starting at $32,000 sound right to you? Mull over the official press release after the jump and then leave your thoughts in Comments.

KYLE BUSCH, No. 18 M&Ms Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing
Finishing Position: 6th

How was your race?
We battled through big adversity, but we made it happen. We got a decent finish out of it. I cant say enough about all of the guys on this 9-11 tribute scheme, the car that we had tonight. It was fun to race it. I wish we were a little bit better. I felt like we were really good in the beginning of the night and kind of dialed ourselves out a little bit the more the race went there, but got it back there close to the end. Just got used up off the bottom and then fell back a few spots and just rode from there.

What would it mean to get a good start next week at Chicagoland?
Weve got to turn a corner here a little bit. Mile-and-a-half stuff, Chicago in particular wasnt great to us the past couple of years. Im looking forward to Chicago. I like going there. Just running the Truck race and then well be ready with the Cup race. I think that weve got a great team and weve got a great leader with Dave Rogers (crew chief) and these guys are excited about it. They dont get too high and they dont get too low so we just make sure we keep doing our job and working as hard as we can just digging in and paying attention to details and I think well be alright.

How were you able to battle back from adversity to earn a top-10 finish tonight?
Well if tonight wasnt one of those nights, I dont know what was. We fought through everything it seemed -- loose wheel, going to the back, driving back up through there. We got to the top-10. Its so tough the more and more you get into these races, because guys have worked on their cars to pass cars and once we got back to the top-10 then we came to pit road a little early and got bit by the caution. Just a hard fought battle tonight and certainly we had to battle through more adversity than we would have liked to, but thats what's going to make us better. Thats whats going to make us stronger, so I cant say enough about all these guys on the 9-11 tribute car tonight. It was fun to drive that thing and I wish we could have got a little bit better there. It seemed like middle part of the race we were down on ourselves and out a little bit trying to free the car up and make it where it would roll the bottom. And then we went back the other way and started tightening it up and got a little bit better, but there at the end those front two guys (Kevin Harvick and Carl Edwards) were just flawless. They were flying and we couldnt keep up with them. Glad to come home and have a decent run here, but when I got used up off the bottom there with the 24 (Jeff Gordon) and fell back to sixth, I just didnt have enough to get back though there.

Does it mean anything to you to go into the Chase as the point leader?
Not unless you cant build on a strong foundation here in the first three or four races. We proved failure in 2008, so we cant have that again.

Were guys impatient early in the race?
It seemed like all night guys were impatient. Just guys that seemed to not have anything to lose were just going for broke and certainly that was us too, but I think we were a little smarter about it and we had to battle through. We had a loose wheel, come back from that and then we had a run there through the middle of the race where we were really good and battled up through there and then we came to pit road and had the caution come out as soon as we came down pit road. We just didnt quite do what we needed to do tonight in order to get a good finish, but still salvaged a sixth. Sixth wont be bad in the Chase if you can keep doing those but this is one of our best tracks so sixth here kind of doesnt float very well.

DENNY HAMLIN, No. 11 FedEx Express Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing
Finishing Position: 9th

What happened early on in the race?
Its amazing how we were able to battle back. This car is absolutely destroyed. Any other race track we would be down 20 laps, but they just worked on it. Got it off the race track and the splitter is broke off, the hood is broke and its just a mess and somehow we salvaged today. It looked like when the 33 (Clint Bowyer) wrecked I checked up, someone hit the 88 (Dale Earnhardt Jr.), the 88 hit me and we just pounded the wall. So, right off the bat we knew we were in big trouble. Still had an amazingly fast car.

How were you able to recover from the early accident?
I mean it was an unbelievable comeback. This car really is destroyed. Shock mounts are all messed up. The splitter is broke off of it. Its just amazing how fast we got this car considering the circumstances. My pit crew just did an amazing job. Thats all there is to it. They got the splitter somewhat off the racetrack and we were just able to just motor up through there.

What are your chances for a championship?
Well, everything from here is a bonus. Were starting last in the Chase, so now weve got 11 spots to move up.

Will a run like this give you some momentum going into the Chase?
I hope so. The plan is to come out of here with a smooth day. It was not smooth by any means, but we just fought hard. Did an amazing job fixing the car. Our car is destroyed. That tells me how fast our car was going to be if we didnt get in that wreck we wouldve been up there contending for a win but a top-10 in these circumstances, Ill take it.

What is your mindset going into the Chase as the wild card?
I mean, theres only one place to go from where were at right now, and thats forward. Were very fortunate to be here, obviously, with the tough season that weve had and the ups and downs and the DNFs and what not. Its kind of a second lease on life for us and our season. Obviously were coming into the Chase now with three consecutive top 10s which Im not sure weve done that all year long. Weve got some momentum. Who knows whats going to happen next week.

How will the Chase change with the new points system this year?
Well, I think that track position is a little bit more important this year than it was last year and so on and so forth. It's just a steadily evolving ?? these cars, we're getting them so good now that everyone is so equal. I think that the pit crews and the crew chief has a bigger role in this year's Chase than what they did in years past. So it's not all about having the fastest car and the best driver. There's a big strategy part that plays out in each and every race. It seems like it's happening more this year than what it has in years past.

Finishing Position: 33rd

JOEY LOGANO, No. 20 Home Depot/Celebration of Service Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing
Finishing Position: 35th

What happened to take you out of the race?
Something internal, thats for sure. We werent real fast with our Home Depot Toyota. I thought we were going to be a lot better in this race. Wed take off really good for a few laps and then the car just got tight. I thought we were at least going to hang in there for probably a top-15 finish. I just felt the last 20 laps something broke internal and it was running down a cylinder and then eventually it just blew up there on the caution. Its unfortunate thats the way its going to end here.

KASEY KAHNE, No. 4 Red Bull Toyota Camry, Red Bull Racing Team
Finishing Position: 38th

What happened to take you out of the race?
I havent seen it. I have no idea. I just know that I was on the outside going into the straightaway and then I just started to turn in and then the 83 (Brian Vickers) hit me pretty hard. Honestly, he got hit by someone else, but I havent seen it so I dont know what exactly happened. It was kind of a weird deal.

I will recommend Hudson to everyone I know

I will recommend Hudson to everyone I know who is looking for a new vehicle. Melissa was more than great; she was friendly, energetic, outgoing, and above all knowledgeable. She had the vehicles I wanted to look at available and when I told her I wanted a particular color she went in the back office for a few moments and came out with a list of dealers who had the car and said if I chose one they did not have in stock could get it.I have always been one to know what I wanted and what I qualified for and she was a bit surprised that a single mom of 4 was able to qualify for the 0% but I knew my credit rating and have bought a house on my own so I was sure I would. She gave us plenty of room when we asked for space to think it over and decide which we were going with. The paperwork was completed very quickly while the car was being detailed again and filled up.

2004 Harley Davidson Road Kin

Call Us Today!
This beautiful 2004 Harley Davidson Road King needs a new home!

Keep up the good work and great customer service!

I am so appreciative of how well the folks at Hudson Toyota took care of me this past Tuesday. I live in Owensboro but was in Madisonville for work. I purchased a used Toyota Prius a couple of months ago (not from Hudson) and it's taking me some time to get used to the Smart Key it uses. I went to Blackwell's to eat lunch and when I came out I realized that I had locked my keys in my car. I thought this was impossible to do but obviously somehow I'd managed to do it! I was a little panicked given that I had no extra key with me! I called my husband and he suggested I call the local Toyota dealership to see if they had any advice. When I called I told the person who answered the phone my problem and she was so nice and told me she'd call the Parts Dept and call me right back. A guy from the Parts Dept called me back within about 5 mins and asked where I was located. I told him I was at Blackwell's and he said he'd be right down! I really expected him to just tell me to call a locksmith! He was there in 5 minutes and it took him about 10 mins to "break in" my car. He was so nice. I think his name was Chris. I asked him what I owed and he said nothing.

My family has always driven Toyota vehicles. I just sold a 2000 Camry with almost 200K miles on it when I got my Prius. I love Toyotas! But now I love them and their dealers even more after my experience with Hudson! Keep up the good work and great customer service!

TOYOTA DRIVER SET TO CLINCH #1 SEED FOR COUNTDOWN With one race remaining before the Countdown to the Championship playoffs, a Toyota driver is assured the #1 seed. The question iswhich one? Del Worsham has all but secured the position, taking a 137-point lead into the weekend and simply needing to qualify into the eliminations field to clinch. However, Antron Brown could snatch away the coveted seed and accompanying bonus points. Brown would need to register his fifth win of the season and set a new national record for elapsed time in Indianapolis to stay in contention.
That would appear unlikely, though, as Worsham has led the series since the second race of the season at Gainesville on the strength of six victories in the seasons first 15 races. He also has one runner-up finish and four semi-finals appearances, while compiling a series-best 38-9 won-loss record in his first full season of Top Fuel competition.
Yet, Brown has been the hottest driver on the circuit of late, winning two of the last three events and advancing to the semi-finals or beyond in each of the last five races. He also recorded the fastest time at last weeks open test in Indy. He will bring a 29-point advantage over third-place into this weekends action.

FOUR DOWN, TWO TO GO Four of the six Toyota NHRA drivers are safely qualified into the Countdown to the Championship playoffs with one race remaining. Top Fuel drivers Del Worsham, Antron Brown, Larry Dixon and Funny Car driver Cruz Pedregon all have locked up spots in the Countdown. Morgan Lucas Racing teammates Shawn Langdon and Morgan Lucas are currently eighth and ninth in the standings, but both are in position to lock up playoff berths this weekend. Langdon simply needs to qualify for Mondays 16-car eliminations, while Lucas will be guaranteed a spot if the two drivers behind him dont meet in Mondays final. Each of the Top Fuel drivers participated in last years Countdown, while Pedregon will make his first appearance since winning the FC title in 2008.

LAST YEARS U.S. NATIONALS Larry Dixon defeated Cory McClenathan in the finals to win his 10th race of the 2010 season and give him his fourth career U.S. Nationals victory. With the win, Dixon went to a perfect 10-for-10 in finals in what was the first race of the 2010 Countdown. Dixon earned the number one qualifying position on Saturday night with a new track record run of 3.776 seconds and then defeated Bruce Litton, Steve Torrence and fellow Toyota driver Shawn Langdon before his showdown with McClenathan.

TOYOTA TOP FUELERS FIND WINNING WAYS - Toyota-sponsored Top Fuel drivers have won 12 of the first 15 events this season. Del Worsham currently leads the series in wins with six, while Antron Brown is second with four. Fellow Toyota drivers Morgan Lucas and Larry Dixon each have won once.
