Toyota says Prius plug-in is "27-percent better than an equivalent diesel"

Toyota Prius Plug-in

With the Toyota Prius plug-in set to launch in early 2012, now's the perfect time to dive into the interim results from the cars' trials in London. Here are some details straight from Toyota:
  • Average journey distance has been 7.3 miles, with 59 percent of all journeys covering between 3.1 and 12.4 miles
  • Average speed has been 17.7 miles per hour, with 69 percent of journeys at speeds less than 18.6 mph
  • Initial fuel consumption data indicates performance is 27 percent better than an equivalent diesel
  • Average recharging time is 72 minutes
  • Where drivers have access to a domestic charge point, more frequent recharging occurs
  • Twenty-two percent of drivers have even been able to drive further than the official 12.5-mile range in EV mode.
  • Electric-powered driving so far has accounted for one third of all miles driven in the PHEV demonstration.
Working in partnership with EDF Energy, Toyota leased 20 third-generation Prius plug-ins to London-based businesses and organizations to monitor vehicle performance and recharging patterns. Details of journey times, speeds, distances, fuel usage and recharging habits have been logged and analyzed to compile useable data. The three-year trial kicked off last summer, meaning that these interim results are from less than one year of real-world use.

Toyota Tacoma to receive nip/tuck this fall

2010 Toyota Tacoma

Toyota is reportedly working on a refresh for its Tacoma mid-size pickup, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal. The refreshed Taco will debut in October, as part of the automaker's plan to debut many all-new or refreshed vehicles this year. In addition to the Tacoma, the Camry and Yaris will also receive substantial overhauls for the new model year.

Bob Carter, group vice president and brand manager for Toyota, says that the 2012 Tacoma will keep the same engine and frame, but will have a new exterior design, as well as an updated interior. Currently, the Tacoma is powered by a 4.0-liter V6 that produces 236 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque.

Additionally, Carter states that the Tacoma will receive new entertainment functions, and as we reported earlier, the automaker's new Entune infotainment system will be part of the offerings. We'll have more details come October.

steve nash parking dance

Company: Toyota Motor Sales

Brand: Toyota

Medium: TV

Ad Agency: Saatchi and Saatchi

Product: Prius

Campaign:"What Happens After Practice"

What We Like: Going to back when Toyota launched its very amusing campaign for its Sienna "Swagger Wagon" TV ad and Youtube videos, the Japanese automaker has been looking for ways to engage consumers by not taking its very practical models so damn seriously. The Prius is an unabashed market success. It defines the hybrid segment. And it is the market leader in fuel economy. It does everything but run on actual crunchy granola in the gas tank. Prius ads do not need to play up the fact that they are super fuel efficient. Everyone knows. So, as we showed you a few days ago, turning to this approach of having NBA star Steve Nash talk about how driven he is, as if it was a Nike ad, is a creative homerun. His deadpan monologue about how competitive he is, talking about making constant adjustments and improvements to his game, while driving a Prius and finally edging out a grandma for a parking space is a way to stand out from the usual hybrid ad that merely screams the highway fuel economy rating. Gotta love Nash's trash-talk dance at the end too.

What We Don't Like: Tough one here. The agency nailed it.

Strategy: Prius has owned the hybrid market. But it is undeniable that Ford Fusion Hybrid and the Dearborn, MI automaker's coming C-Max all hybrid brand will begin to cut into Prius's perceived leadership. If there is a weakness in the Prius brand at all, it is that it is widely viewed as a car for celery eaters. Honestly, the current Prius is a bit bloodless to drive. Pumping some hemoglobin into it via clever advertising that doesn't take the car so deadly serious seems like a decent idea for a brand that is this mature.

Grade: A

Toyota safety tech can take steering control to avoid impact

Toyota Emblem

According to The Detroit News, Toyota is working on a new pre-crash system that will actually take control and steer the vehicle to minimize impact in the event of an unavoidable collision. The system combines super-sensitive radar with a camera array in the front fascia to detect possible impacts. On-board computers then calculate the correct levels of braking and steering required to avoid the crash, and if the driver fails to act, the automatic system takes over.

Like most manufacturers, Toyota has the admirable goal of reducing injuries and fatalities in its products to zero, though The Detroit News reports that the automaker wouldn't comment on when we could expect to see the innovations on the road. The pre-crash steering is specifically designed to reduce the chance of a vehicle-pedestrian impact, and Toyota is also working on systems to accommodate drivers who have heart attacks while behind the wheel.

It's true that vehicle fatalities have seen a steady decline over the past few years thanks to improved safety technology, but as cars get safer, drivers become even more detached from the task at hand. Economists call it a Jevons Paradox; drivers have effectively consumed the safety benefits supplied by car companies to become lazier and less safe than they would be without the tech. Maybe Toyota should find a way to force drivers to put down their phones, shut off their infotainment screens and simply drive. Just a thought.

Toyota gives wheelchair van as wedding gift to amazing bride

Rachelle Friedman, Chris Chapman and their Toyota/Braun Sienna Ramp Van

Toyota and The Braun Corporation have partnered to provide a unique wedding present to a very special bride. A little over a year ago, Rachelle Friedman was celebrating her bachelorette party when she was pushed into a swimming pool. When she fell, Friedman broke her C6 vertebra and became a quadriplegic in an instant. After 14 months of hospitals, physical therapy and daunting medical bills, Friedman and her fiancé finally tied the knot on July 22.

While the bride and her family were preparing for the wedding, Toyota and Braun, one of the leading manufacturers of wheelchair-accessible van conversions, lent Friedman a vehicle to help out. Before that, her mother had to carry her in and out of the family's SUV. What Friedman didn't know was that Toyota was planning to surprise the newlyweds with an accessible Sienna Rampvan of their very own.

The new vehicle has opened up a new level of comfort and independence, and Friedman says that she can't wait to learn to drive on her own next. While most of us would have a hard time facing Friedman's reality, the young woman has maintained a positive outlook throughout her ordeal that's as inspirational as it is amazing. We wish Friedman and her husband, Chis Chapman, the best. Hit the jump for the press release.

2012 Toyota Camry closer to revealing new look

spy shot 2012 toyota camry

Toyota says big things are in store for the redesigned 2012 Camry, and the vehicle is nearly ready to show its face to the world. The mid-sized sedan isn't quite ready yet, however, and our spy photographers have captured the camo-wearing four-doors making their way around the desert.

We've been promised a more dynamic looking Camry the next time out, and the angles cut around the nose look sharper than recent generations. Still, it's just speculation at this point, because that camouflage is doing a pretty good job of hiding what lies beneath. Thankfully, we won't have to wait too much longer to see the updated sedan, as it's slated to hit dealer lots this fall.

Toyota offers back-seat passengers a new Window to the World

window to the world video

Everywhere we look we're surrounded by "smart" technology embedded into everyday items. Refrigerators have built-in televisions and internet connections, while our phones contain more computing power than a NASA control room from the '70s. Automakers are also ready to ride the tech-train to tomorrow, and Toyota has provided a glimpse of a new way to give passengers a window to the world.

A car already has such a window, but what if the glass was able to provide both information of the world outside and an interactive tool to view it. Engineers and designers from Toyota Motor Europe and the Copenhagen Instituted of Interaction Design have begun thinking about the future, and it could feature a rather unique option for the rear windows. Touch-screen glass would allow one to see how far objects lie in the distance, pinch to zoom on an area outside and to generally learn more about what's going on outside.

It's called the Window to the World concept, and you can experience it by watching the video after the jump.

2012 Toyota RAV4 EV will "definitely be sold to the general public"

Toyota RAV4 EV

Recent reports, including ours, have incorrectly stated the 2012 RAV4 EV will only be sold to fleet and car sharing organizations. Though we now know that's not true, we'd like to set the record straight by quoting an official response from Toyota about the inaccurate reports:
The 2012 RAV4 EV will definitely be sold to the general public. We anticipate robust public interest in the RAV4 EV and are keen to inform consumers that their future vehicle options include a battery electric Toyota.

Toyota is the only manufacturer bringing two battery electric vehicles to the market in 2012 - the RAV4 EV and the Scion iQ EV. While the RAV4 EV will be available to the public, the Scion iQ EV will be marketed to fleet and car sharing programs only.
So, perhaps a model name mix-up triggered the erroneous reports? Either way, we're glad that the all-electric crossover will be available for retail sale. Thirsty for more details on the electric RAV4? Check out Autoblog Green's quick spin of the prototype RAV4 EV.

Toyota Hilux pickup gets fresh skin, more power for 2012

When we think of Toyota icons, we tend to think of vehicles like the Prius, Land Cruiser, or perhaps the Corolla, the world's best-selling nameplate. But entire towns have been built and many wars have been fought on the back of Toyota's Hilux pickup. Celebrated the world over for its legendary ruggedness and anvil-like reliability, it's been the workhorse of choice everywhere from Africa to Antarctica for decades. In other words, the debut of a new Hilux qualifies as a genuinely important development in global transportation.

And while this isn't an all-new model, there are a raft of changes worth noting for the new year. Starting with the obvious, the 2012 Hilux receives a completely new front clip, including new fenders headlights, bumper, hood, and three-bar grille. Additional changes include updated rear fenders, as well as new mirrors and alloy wheel designs.

Inside, the changes are mostly minor, though there's a new upper dashboard piece and an available 6.1-inch touchscreen multimedia system. Beyond that, Toyota cites "greater colour consistency throughout" and some silver trim bits as key changes.

Underhood, the diesel-powered two-wheel-drive Hilux 2.5 D-4D gets a new variable nozzle turbo to boost power to 144 horses (+24) and 253 pound-feet of torque, all while lowering fuel consumption.

Overall, the Hilux is available in three bodystyles with two engines and transmissions, along with two- or four-wheel drive. Check out our high-res gallery below and learn more in the official press release after the jump.

Report: Carmakers Squander Fuel-Saving Potential of Hybrids, Pad MSRPs With Forced Features

The Union of Concerned Scientists has released its annual Hybrid Scorecard for 2011. The group found that the auto industry often wastes the fuel-saving potential of gas-electric technology, delivering paltry fuel economy gains and pricing the cars out of the reach of most consumers. The best-scoring hybrid by far was the Toyota Prius, which tallied an environmental improvement score of 9.2, with second and third place going to the Ford Fusion Hybrid and Honda Civic Hybrid, receiving a 7.8 and 7.4, respectively.

Its not just the Toyota Prius and everyone else anymore, said the study's author, Don Anair, in a press release. Automakers from Ford to Hyundai and Honda to Nissan are using hybrid technology to boost fuel economy and cut pollution without breaking the bank for consumers.

Still, the group found that most hybrids fail to live up to their potential. Though nine of the top ten hybrid models offer fuel economy of greater than 30 mpg and score better than average on the report card, many gas-electrics are far from being a good value propositionregardless of how a consumer weighs fuel or emissions savings. Automakers are still producing hybrids that fail to deliver on the technologys potential to dramatically improve fuel economy, said Anair.

The two areas where luxury and light-duty hybrids in particular seemed to fail were improved fuel economy and price premium, which the UCS says is often created when carmakers force hybrid buyers to pay for features that don't come standard on non-hybrid base model equivalents. In the case of some vehicles, this can add thousands of extra dollars to the price of a car.

The UCS also criticized automakers for dedicating too much of the supplemental electric motor boost offered in hybrids to improved performance, and not enough to decreasing the workload of the gasoline engine. Some of the lower-scoring hybrids in the study achieve fuel economy gains of just 2 mpg compared to conventional models.

Toyota Motor Europe completes construction of new Zaventem Proving Ground

TME Zavantem Proving Ground

TME Zaventem Proving Ground - Click above for high-res images

When we went by the European headquarters of Toyota in Zaventem, Belgium, to check out the Lexus CT 200h then still under development, the Japanese automaker was in the middle of a vast expansion plan. A year later and after two years of construction, Toyota Motor Europe (TME) has completed its new test facility, and released details of all that it encompasses.

The new Zaventem Proving Ground includes a 0.8-mile banked oval, a 300-foot skidpad plus test roads to evaluate and fine-tune everything from ride comfort to brake performance.

All in all, the proving ground alone takes up 700,000 square and cost some $67 million to construct. The facility will allow Toyota to conduct much of its own R&D on-site at Zaventem, instead of booking time at the massive test track owned by Ford in Lommel or a similar complex.

Follow the jump for the full press release and scope out the aerial shots of the new facility in the high-res image gallery.

Toyota Prius Will Return to Full Production in September

In June, sales of the Toyota Prius fell by nearly two-thirds compared to last year's numbers, at a time when Toyota should have been reaping the rewards of having the world's most popular and iconic fuel-sipper. With gas prices high and the average price of used a Prius up more than 25 percent, the demand has clearly been there. There just aren't enough cars to go around.

The aftermath of this year's Japanese earthquake has kept supplies of the Prius and other hybrids limitedmuch as insufficient production capacity had kept them limited during the height of the last gas spike in 2008.

Now Toyota says that its recovery is moving along ahead of schedule, and that the Prius will be back to full production this September. Dealerships in the United States should begin to feel the influx of new vehicles by year's end, meaning that consumers can expect to notice an increase in the number or Prii on lotsand likely a decrease in dealer markupsby early 2012.

On June 22, the Toyota issued a press release promising to deliver 75,000 new Prii to the U.S. by year's end, before quickly retracting it. The carmaker now says it expects to sell 36,000 of the vehicles in the U.S. by the end of the summer. American sales for 2011 should end higher than 2010's total of 140,928 but far below Toyota's pre-earthquake goal of more than 181,000 units.

With production headed back to normal and the new Prius V wagon coming to dealerships this fall, 2012 should be a banner year for the world's leading hybrid. Next year will also see the release of the Prius Plug-in and compact Prius C, rounding out the family of cars the carmaker hopes will soon dominate as the world's leading vehicle platformgas or hybrid. So while 2008 and 2011 represent unfortunate missed opportunities for Toyota and the hybrid market as a whole, the longterm outlook has never been brighter.

TOYOTA NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) - Kyle Busch -- Notes & Quotes - Kentucky Speedway

TOYOTA NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) - Kyle Busch -- Notes & Quotes - Kentucky Speedway

KYLE BUSCH, No. 18 M&Ms Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing

How is your preparation going for this weekend?
The weekend has gone pretty well. We unloaded here pretty well last night with the M&Ms Camry and did a good job with the Cup Series being able to get some laps down and have a fast race car right off the truck. Made some changes to it just trying to make it better and just trying to learn the place a little bit and what kind of characteristics we might see here this weekend that are different from those Ive experienced in the Truck or Nationwide Series. But, from there were trying to get some laps today in the Nationwide car for practice and then qualifying. Unfortunately, I dont think were going to get there. I might not even see the track with the Cup car. That wouldnt hurt my feelings to bad. Weve had some pretty fast laps this weekend, so well just try to go with the best knowledge we can at how to set up the car and kind of pinpoint some ideas to put a fast race car out there on the race track for tonights Nationwide and tomorrows Cup race.

Should NASCAR race at more new tracks?
I dont know how many more there are. What other ones are there we dont go to that we should go to? Maybe a couple of road course events or something like that -- there's a couple of cool road courses around. Every big speedway that I know we pretty much go to. Texas World (Speedway) is still there, but its out in the middle of nowhere so you probably wont get too many people there. All in all, I do feel like -- I've always said the season can be shortened up a couple of races by going to a couple places only once, but thats not my decision. Thats NASCAR and network TV, I believe.

What do you think of the Nationwide Series moving next years race from ORP to the Brickyard?
I really like ORP. I feel like thats a really cool place. Theres a lot of people that go to ORP that like going to ORP because its a short track race, because its been on the Nationwide -- was Busch Series -- schedule since 82 or whatever. A lot of history there. A lot of people that have won races there along with the Sprint Car days and everything. Moving it to the Brickyard, youre obviously moving it into more mainstream with the Cup cars being there the same weekend. More attention is going to be around it probably. You wont have to travel between two different venues. I guarantee you since its going to be at the same venue, Ill probably be running it. So, youll see some Cup guys doing it rather than not so many traveling back and forth from the short track. I think its good and I think its bad. Theres certainly two sides to every story, I guess, and sometimes more. Theres a lot of people that only go to the short track and wouldnt really care to go the big track and now that the race is at the big track you might lose some of those fans, but you might gain more fans because they like the big track, so who knows.

Why are there fewer dominant teams/drivers this season?
I think its because everyones so equal -- competition is so tight. Everybody has a really good sense of this car now. Theres not much room for leeway in the rule book for us to get creative and get our cars faster than anybody elses. You notice it more come down to the end of the race and strategy and how pit strategy plays out, fuel mileage plays out and how all of that comes down to who you see in victory lane, rather than somebody coming off pit road eighth or 10th and then being able to pass everybody and get up to the lead. The cars are all so equal, they run the same time that anytime you can get out front and not have to race the guys behind you, it just seems like a better opportunity to put yourself in victory lane.

What do you think of the Nationwide Series championship point standings?
I think that its great that its just the Nationwide Series regulars are the guys that I guess you would say, checked the box, racing for the championship over there. I think that with the way (Ricky) Stenhouse and (Reed) Sorenson and (Justin) Allgaier and those guys -- they deserve the opportunity to go after a championship and race for a championship. Its been cool to see and kind of watching that back and forth and seeing who might win the deal. Ive kind of got a couple favorites that Im pulling for, but its a matter of getting their own identity in the Nationwide Series rather than having somebody like myself or Carl (Edwards) or even Kevin (Harvick) stealing the spotlight.

Has checking the box for the series championship you wish to compete for worked?
I feel like I said, its brought its own identity to the series, so I think its certainly better. Weve all known that it probably should have been this way for a while, but NASCAR didnt make the change until just this year. I feel like its a positive.

What would you think about participating in the Grand-Am race at Indianapolis next year?
I wont drive the road course, I would get confused coming through turn one backwards. That wont be too good. I think those guys being there is going to be cool. Im actually kind of wondering how theyre going to plan the weekend, you know. We always use that center road and that center road is part of the race track. How else are we going to get around the course when those cars are running whether its practice, whether its qualifying or whether its the race. Thats going to be interesting and all the motorhomes that are parked down in turn four and the Miller Lite party deck and everything thats down there too. Theyre going to have to move all that. They cant leave it there. Its going to be different, thats for sure. I wont run that race. Those cars are hot too. Theyre too hot. Need to be able to roll down the window or something.

What do you think of adding the boot to the Watkins Glen race?
You know, if you run the boot then you have to run less laps. Either way, to me it doesnt make a difference. Whatever we decide to do, we do. I think before NASCAR heads in that direction, just off a spur of the moment, we may need to do some testing just to see how gear ratios would work out and stuff like that. From what I remember, I think the boot is a little bit narrower than the regular course, track width wise. Say the tracks 30 feet wide, I think the boot-area of the track is only 20 feet wide. I could be wrong, but from just watching the races on TV, it looks a little narrower. It may produce more passing zones, but it may not. Our cars are certainly different than Indy cars or Grand-Am cars.

What are some of your favorite NASCAR wins?
Thats a tough question. I probably cant even remember 10 of them, to be honest with you. I think Vegas, winning there in my hometown was probably the biggest win of my Sprint Cup Series career. Ive not won the Coke 600 or the Brickyard or the Daytona 500. Vegas is right up there on the top of my list. Id say the Bristol night race. Guys always talk about how important that one is and how much that one feels like. There was a Nationwide win earlier this year at Phoenix, I led all the laps and (at) ORP I almost did the same thing, but I didnt get it done. I missed like three. The Truck series, Ive won so many there that I think the best one that I remember was the finish at Atlanta with I think it was Jack Sprague and Johnny Benson or a couple other guys, where we were racing coming to the stripe and we all wrecked out of turn four and I made it to the line. Those guys werent so successful at it. Those are a couple -- just the ones off the top of my head right now. Certainly, hopefully theres plenty more.

Is this a long weekend?
Yeah, its certainly a longer weekend this year because of all the testing and everything that theyve allowed us and the extra track time and all that. Its certainly hot. It was hot yesterday and just muggy. Todays cooler so if we get to get on the race track it will be better and if we get to run the race tonight, it might be cooler tonight. That will all be fine. Sure, theres plenty of opportunity to get tired, especially since we were supposed to have morning practice at nine AM and we got out there for a little bit. Now the rest of the day is going to kind of be down and rainy. Might just relax a little bit, take it easy, put your feet up. Like tomorrow, weve got all morning. I dont have anything to do until like four in the afternoon so youve got plenty of time. Theres no reason why you cant get enough rest. Plus, Ive got the awesome NOS Energy Drink sponsor that keeps me going. Plenty of flavors to choose from -- help yourselves. M&Ms hauler, Z-Line Designs, NOS Energy Drink hauler and pick yourself up one. New charge citrus flavor tastes just like Mello Yello. Its a southern thing, right?

What would it mean to get the victory in the inaugural Kentucky NSCS race?
That would be cool. Ive never done that before. Certainly, a lot of guys are really upping the stakes or upping the ante if you will that they want to win this thing. Its not going to come easy, thats for sure. I know Jeffs (Gordon) probably been the most successful driver at doing it. We started out the weekend pretty good last night, wed like to be able to carry that on into tonight and try to win the Nationwide Series race and then have a good shot for it on Saturday night. Weve had good times posted so far with our Cup car. Its been fast. It drives okay, so keep it out of trouble and keep it up front and try to win.

How can you be successful at Indianapolis?
You know, thats probably one of the trickiest places we go to on the schedule. Pocono being one, Darlington being one, Indy being another. Its so hard to find a particular line that really, really works for you or really works for your car because the groove is so narrow. Its plenty wide for one or one-and-a-half cars, but the line that you run around there, you vary six inches and it feels so different. You really have to be particular in hitting your marks and getting your car setup. The way that it changes throughout the weekend going from practice, not much rubber on the race track and then to the race with a lot of rubber on the race track -- the trajectory of the corners changes. How wide do you enter the corner? How long do you stay out? How sharp do you turn down? Indys definitely a particular race track and its exciting for us all to go there, especially with the history there and the prestige of winning that event. Id love nothing more than to win there. It would be something cool. Been close a couple times, but like to get a little closer.

Do they bumps here add character to the track or create problems?
I call it both, to be honest with you. Its certain bumps add character to any particular race track. I remember Charlotte when it was as bumpy as it was down the backstretch. Its definitely really bumpy. We have to develop a package that will work around here and go through the bumps that will create our cars speed and still be able to maintain that speed, so its not easy. Its a balancing act for sure. Like last night, I felt like my truck was too rough. My Nationwide car is pretty good and my Cup car is pretty good. There are shock packages you work on. Different things you do with the springs to try and help it out. Its a fine tune adjustment. You just have to work on it. From what I heard, theyre re-doing the infield here after this event and I certainly hope they are taking into consideration doing the race track. Im not sure whats going on there, but it needs a good look at.

How do you feel about the Kansas paving project and the Kentucky safer barrier?
Yeah, I heard that last night. I didnt know that it needed repaving. I guess theyre saying theyre having problems with the seams or something like that. I dont know. I havent been there when it has rained a lot. Us not being there while it rains a lot -- if theres weepers or something like that -- theyre scared maybe theres a problem. If it comes down to a weekend where you get a lot of rain and you have problems -- that could be a reason. I think the guys that have repaved Daytona, and Homestead and I think theyre doing Phoenix now and Talladega -- I dont know if its the same group that has done all those. I believe it is or one of the same engineers that did all those -- but so far theyve done a really nice job. Theyve been able -- the paving, the asphalt they use is really good and everything else too. I feel like theyre getting a system that really, really works well. So, its making it easier for all of us when we get to a racetrack to have grip. Vegas -- they didnt use -- we didnt use those guys at Vegas and Vegas didnt turn out very good. I think people can certainly take notice from the group thats doing all these repaving jobs. And, you asked me about the safer barriers, but yeah -- I dont know whose dumb idea that was to put the wall out in turns one and two -- six feet away from the racetrack -- but thats not right. That was wrong.

Do you have a developing rivalry with Joey Coulter in the NCWTS?
Joey Coulter? Alright, I didnt know there was one, but if there is one developing Im now well aware of it. Last night, he was going to win the race if that caution didnt come out. He was way faster than we were. I dont know if I could have held him off. Its just a matter of being in the right position at the right time. Hes certainly getting better and getting good equipment under him where hes able to run up front and be in contention to win races, so that was cool for him Im sure. Im sure hell learn a little bit off what happened in that last restart and try to get better for next time.

What will it take to beat Joey Logano at Kentucky Speedway?
Yeah, I dont know. If we were here in the old car, Id certainly say he is the favorite. Being the new car that we are in this year, its definitely different. The Ford has been really fast. Carl (Edwards) has been good. The (Kevin) Harvick team seems strong. Were decent. Were definitely not slouches by any means. It throws a different curve into the game, so well see how it plays out tonight. Im looking forward to it and I hope were the ones that can take it away it from him. Id hate it that I did it, but I need a win tonight to keep it going for tomorrow night.

When do you start thinking about a weekend sweep?
It becomes five (laps) to go in the Cup race, if youre close. If youre running 20th, its pretty much out the window. If youre running second, chasing the leader down and catching him, theres certainly an option there. If youre leading and somebodys catching you, youre going to do everything you can to win the thing. Its just a matter of putting it all together. Youre not worried about it yet. We would love to win tonight and if we can, we can. If not, then well try to win tomorrow night anyway and we come up short by one.

What would you think about the Nationwide Series running the Indianapolis road course?
Yeah, that wouldnt be bad. I dont see anything wrong with it at all. Trying to think of how the course goes. Theres going to be some tight sections through the esses, I guess you would call it when you come down that access road and then you turn in and then you kind of go u-turn, u-turn and then back out onto the big track. Youll see some congestion there, but otherwise it would probably be a good event. If they did that, I probably wouldnt run it by the way.

Is this the most laps you have run in a race weekend?
This will be pretty close to that. Im trying to think back to Bristol maybe. Lap count wise, you could probably run more at Bristol, but mileage-wise, its probably more miles here, for sure. It definitely wears on you a little bit, but Im going to Slinger (Speedway -- Slinger, Wisconsin) on Sunday as long as the schedule allows and we can get out of here tonight with a Nationwide race and then tomorrow with the Cup race. I dont know if theyll run us tomorrow morning in Nationwide or if theyll wait until Sunday. If they do that, that will hinder my plans to go to Slinger. Plan is to stay on schedule.

Toyota NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) - EFI Testing Notes & Quotes - Kentucky Speedway

Toyota NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) - EFI Testing Notes & Quotes - Kentucky Speedway

MIKE SKINNER, EFI Test Toyota Camry, Michael Waltrip Racing

How was the first testing session with the Camry outfitted with EFI (Electronic Fuel Injection)?
We started out a little rocky this morning -- we had some skips and a few bumps in the road. Theyve worked really, really hard. Theyve remapped this EFI system several times and theyve got it running really, really good now. I think its going to be competitive. I think the lap times were respectable for what were doing and the car were doing it with. I think were far enough along now to put one of our full-time Sprint Cup drivers in it and get a second opinion and see what they think about it.

Could you tell a difference between the EFI car and a non-fuel injected Camry?
I drove both today, as you know, and on the race track at first you could tell a lot of difference, but we didnt have this thing worked out. Each map change that theyve made -- they went backwards, they went forwards, they went backwards and they went forward -- the last three runs have all been forward. On the race track now, Im not so sure you can tell a big difference at all.

Did it take any time to get the EFI Camry acclimated to the race track?
Out of the box, it was fine. Ive done a lot of laps here. We used to test here a lot back in the RCR (Richard Childress Racing) days. I won a truck race here and I have a lot of laps in trucks here, so the racetrack wasnt any problem at all.

What is the next step in the development of the EFI system?
Were starting to nitpick things a little bit now and what I want to work on next is to get the car to come in and out of the pits and not be ratty. We need to be able to maintain pit road speed. Theres a bit of gain there if the car isnt surging at pit road speed, because if your cars surging at pit road speed you have to go on the latter side -- you have to go on the back side of that -- and if youre giving up a mile-an-hour on pit road, then on green flag starts you give up a lot of time on the race track. I want to work on getting this EFI car to where we get on and off pit road with it okay, we get in and out of the pits with it okay, and it will maintain pit road speed without surging.

LEE WHITE, TRD, U.S.A. (Toyota Racing Development) president and general manager

How do you feel about the move to EFI?
The injection thing, particularly at the level were doing it here, is something we have three decades of experience with. It doesnt mean its easy, because we want to do it right. Weve spent a lot of time working together with McLaren and Freescale, and of course with NASCAR. Weve had weekly meetings with NASCAR to try and contribute with everything around the ECU that McLaren provides: the looming; the sensors; connectors between the ECU and harness that is in the engine compartment; how you deal with heat; how you deal with crash damage; if you have to change out an ECU what kind of connector can you use; and tried to help them from our experience. Weve done some track testing that the NASCAR guys have done with us and participated and collected data along with our own guys for our use. Its been a very cooperative project and Im sure the other manufacturers have contributed, as well as engine builders that are out there -- with Hendrick, Roush, Yates, Childress, Penske and Joe Gibbs Racing and TRD. Its a very interesting program and were moving forward with it.

How has todays EFI test gone so far?
So far today, its been great. Most of the issues that I think we were going to have weve sorted through either on the dyno, or in private testing, and we were able to make way so far. It looks to me like everyone here has had a pretty trouble-free day. I know for us, its been a matter of logging laps and some minor changes to adjust the drivability issues around the garage more than anything. Theres nothing that weve seen in terms of performance on the race track that worries us at all.

What were the objectives for todays EFI test?
Just logging laps. Were in an environment here we cant duplicate on the dyno -- which is heat and vibration associated with coming into the garage area, idling around, parking, shutting it down, letting it heat soak, firing it back up, and all the things that are really impossible to do on a dyno. So, youre just completing the test evolution.

Are you already ahead of the curve and can you use what you know?
Frankly, I think were still trying to catch up for the carburetors. The carburetors are so highly evolved and do certain things so well, Im not sure at this point I think were still a few horsepower behind the carburetors are. Given what happens with the phenomenon of charge cooling with the carburetor sucking the air through at very high velocity, which actually cools the air to a great degree and then mixes it with fuel in that process, you dont do that with the fuel injection. You dont have that charge cooling effect which helps multiple horsepower, so well see. I think everyone here would agree that it will be very hard to make more power with the fuel injected engine than where were at with the carburetor. The amount of air thats being allowed into the engine is very similar, because the throttle body that NASCAR has approved for use is very close to the same size as the carburetors weve all been using. I think theyll probably be a bit greener -- you're not going to have the fuel spilling into the exhaust system when you back off the throttle. You can actually control that, so the fans will see a modest difference. You wont see the black smoke from all the flames belching out the tailpipes. You wont hear a bit of difference. You wont see a bit of difference just watching the cars go around the race track. To me, thats good. Its not that type of thing where its going to be dramatically different senses that you are going to pick up that your hearing or seeing or smelling or anything. But, just the knowledge that its a step in that direction towards something thats more relevant to what you buy on the showroom floor -- theres a certain number of fans that I think that means something to. Hopefully, as we move forward more and more of those people will come watch.

Toyota NHRA Chicago Preview

Toyota NHRA Chicago Preview

What: NHRA OReilly Auto Parks Route 66 Nationals
When: Friday, July 8 Sunday, July 10
Where: Route 66 Raceway, Joliet, Ill.
Television: SPN2 - Qualifying 7/9, 9:30 p.m. 11:30 p.m. ET ESPN2 - Eliminations 7/10, 9:00 p.m. 12 midnight ET

WORSHAM RUSHIN TOWARD THE COUNTDOWN After earning his fourth victory of the season at Norwalk, Del Worsham continues to lead the NHRA Top Fuel point standings by 61 points a lead he has maintained since winning at Gainesville in March. The long-time Funny Car driver-turned-Top Fuel pilot could all but clinch his berth in the Countdown to the Championship playoffs in Round 11 this weekend. The top 10 drivers advance to the playoffs and Worsham currently owns a 500-point lead over 11th place.

Racing in Top Fuel for the first time since 1995, Worsham leads the series in wins (five), number one qualifying positions (three), finals appearances (five) and elimination round won-loss percentage (23-6, .793). The Al-Anabi Racing driver advanced to the semi-finals or beyond in seven of the 10 races this season.

PEDREGON RESURGENCE CONTINUES By taking his Snap-On Toyota Camry Solara to its third straight trip to the semi-finals or finals at the most recent event at Norwalk, Cruz Pedregon is now within 49 points of second-place as the NHRA heads to Chicago this weekend. With his Norwalk run, Pedregon has advanced to the semi-finals or beyond in six of 10 events this season, as well as earning two number one qualifying positions. With six races remaining in the regular season, the two-time FC champ has almost certainly punched his ticket for this years Countdown to the Championship playoffs.

Thats a far cry from last year when the Route 66 Raceway event marked round 10 of the championship. Pedregon didnt qualify at Chicagoland and hadnt advanced past the second round in any of this year first 10 events. He would go on to fall short of qualifying for the playoffs for the second consecutive year after winning the 2008 title.

TOYOTA TOP FUELERS FIND WINNING WAYS - Toyota-sponsored Top Fuel drivers have won eight of the first 10 events this season. Four of the nine events have featured all-Toyota final. Overall, Toyota drivers have garnered 14 of the 20 finals spots in Top Fuel events this season. In addition, four of the five drivers have at least one win and each of the five drivers has appeared in at least one final this season.

DIXON LOOKS FOR CHICAGO REPEAT Larry Dixon will be looking for his second consecutive Route 66 Raceway victory this weekend after outlasting the competition a year ago in a weekend that saw rain drops take to the track as often as race cars. A rain storm came in after the second round of Sundays eliminations, which resulted in a five-hour delay, but it didnt slow Dixon, who saved his best for last registering a pair of 3.7 runs, knocking off Doug Kalitta in the semis with a 3.78 pass and then earning the victory with a 3.77 to defeat Tony Schumacher in the finals. The win was Dixons 53rd and moved him past Joe Amato for second all-time among Top Fuel drivers.
