NADA Guides Car Buyers Market Study - Click above for high-res image gallery

NADA Guides has released its Quarterly Car Buyers Market Report, and six models earned the organizations Top Recommended Buys designation. The 2011 Acura TL, Dodge Challenger R/T, GMC Terrain SLE-2, Hyundai Azera Limited, Toyota Tacoma Double Cab V6 Manual and Toyota Venza I4 AWD all made the cut. While low first-year depreciation rates factor into which vehicles win out in the report, NADA Guides also evaluates vehicles based on criteria like whether or not a model is competitively priced, is available with incentives or rebates, and dealer inventory volumes.

Surprisingly enough, the 2011 Dodge Challenger R/T carried the lowest first-year depreciation rate of all the vehicles on the list. With a rate of just 8 percent, the Mopar muscle car beat out the vehicle with the next-lowest rate - the Toyota Tacoma Double Cab V6 Manual - by two percentage points. Meanwhile, the Hyundai Azera limited packed the highest depreciation rate among the vehicles on the list at 21 percent, followed by the Acura TL at 19 percent. You can check out the full report after the break.

Hudson Toyota went out of their way to get me in the car I wanted. They sent someone to my house to pick me up, which is 30 miles. I was welcomed and they asked me what vehicle I was looking for and they got me the loan and the payment I was looking for . I now own a nice clean Grand Prix. I would buy from them again. Toyota to reveal GRMN Hybrid concept at Nrburgring 24

Toyota GRMN Hybrid Concept II
Toyota GRMN Hybrid Concept II - Click above for high-res image

Toyota is set to pull the sheets back on a new convertible sports hybrid at this year's Nurburgring 24-Hour endurance race. Co-developed by Gazoo Racing, the GRMN Hybrid Concept II is a slightly updated version of the concept that Toyota displayed at the 2010 Tokyo Auto Salon.

With its gasoline engine mounted mid-ship and a hybrid all-wheel-drive system, the GRMN should deliver drivers plenty of grip and excellent balance as well. Total combined output sits at 295 horsepower, with 245 ponies coming from the gasoline V6 and another 50 arriving via an electric motor. That motor supplies power to the two front wheels only.

The automaker says the machine weighs in at less than 3,300 lbs, though there's no indication as to what sort of fuel economy to expect from the drop-head. So, when can you buy one? We wouldn't hold our breath. With its wild looks and pricey all-wheel-drive system, it'll be a cold day in Toyota City before the GRMN lands on dealer lots. Hit the jump for the press release.

Toyota says NA production to recover by September, earlier than expected

Toyota Emblem

Toyota has announced that it expects its North American production to reach 100 percent capacity as early as September - far ahead of original post-quake estimates. So far, eight of the company's 12 models built in North America are back to 100 percent capacity, and total production is hoped to improve by as much as 80 percent by August. In an official press release, Bob Carter, Toyota's group vice president and general manager, says that the progress is thanks to the hard work of individuals both here and in Japan, and that the upcoming months will focus on ramping up output to make up for lost time.

After Japan's earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disasters last March, Toyota wasn't expected to reach full manufacturing capacity in North America until December at the earliest. Click past the break to check out the quick press release.

New Prius rap video takes to cruising Whole Foods parking lot

Whole Foods Parking Lot - Click above to watch video after the jump

Turns out, you can spin the whole "cashed up greenie" bit into a few minutes of enjoyable parody rap. Don't believe us? Check out "Whole Foods Parking Lot," the first project from the Fog and Smog collaborative, which pokes fun at the entire ecosystem of hybrids, Smart cars and overpriced vegetables. Oh, and those little shopping carts.

Fog and Smog is based in both the San Francisco Bay Area (fog) and Los Angeles (smog) and these fun-loving artists (they have day jobs as composers, film editors, producers, designers, deejays, animators and photographers) are either regular customers - or maybe they just date some.

Check out the Toyota Prius-driving video (a bit NSFW) after the jump, and if you're looking for more, check out similar classics *ahem* by Casual Mafia ("In My Prius"), Grynch ("My Volvo"), J Brave ("Dipping In My Tesla"), and of course, Toyota and its own "Swagger Wagon" spot. There, you'll find plenty of proof that comedy rap videos starring unlikely vehicles are nothing new; and that they're not always a good thing.

Are you the new Toyota Yaris?

2012 Toyota Yaris
2012 Toyota Yaris - Click above for high-res image gallery

The subcompact B-segment is where it's at these days. This once-overlooked segment of vehicles has been booming lately, what with recent additions like the Ford Fiesta and Mazda2, not to mention soon-to-be-released models like the Chevrolet Sonic, Nissan Versa, Hyundai Accent and Kia Rio. Toyota is a player in this segment, but the Yaris, isn't exactly aging too well, but a brand new version is just around the corner. That is, if these photos from a Hungarian Toyota dealership's Facebook page are anything to go on.

This stylish new Yaris looks to be the end result of what renderings and spy shots have foretold, though it's still unclear whether or not this is indeed the car that will be sold here in the United States - this could simply be the Euro-market Yaris. Either way, if this new hatchback is destined for consumption here in the States, we'll likely hear about it within the coming months.

2012 Toyota Prius PHEV to feature selectable EV mode, full regen

toyota prius plug-in hybrid vehicle
Plug-in Prius Concept - Click above for high-res image gallery

Toyota has been showing off its plug-in hybrid Prius since it debuted in concept form at the 2009 Los Angeles Auto Show. The Japanese automaker is getting ready to deliver the 2012 production version, and we just found out that it will have some significant changes over the prototype versions we've seen so far.

The 2012 Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid Vehicle boasts two unique features; a selectable EV driving mode, and the ability to apply recaptured energy to the electric-only driving range.

The selectable EV driving mode will be quite useful for trips requiring the use of a highway or that cover longer distances than simple in-town errand running. This will allow Prius PHEV drivers to conserve energy for electric-only jaunts. A button will allow you to turn the EV mode on or off.

Any run-of-the-mill Prius hybrid uses regeneration to replenish the battery. In the protoptye PHEVs, no more energy can be recaptured and stored for later use than the regular non-plug-in model. That means there was no way to extend EV-only range without plugging back in. On the production version of the Prius PHEV, the car will be able to take advantage of that regenerated energy, and extend the time the car can spend in EV mode.

Toyota's baby Prius C spotted for the first time

Toyota Prius C Spy Shots
Toyota Prius C spy shots - Click above for high-res image gallery

In addition to the larger 2012 Prius V (which we recently put through its paces for the first time), Toyota is working on a smaller version of its illustrious hybrid, previewed by the Prius C Concept from this year's Detroit Auto Show. Our trusty spy photographers have just spotted the first Prius C prototypes running about, and while the original concept was a decidedly sporty-looking thing, the production model's design seems to have been softened a bit.

Because the Prius C is so much shorter than the standard Prius hatch - about 20 inches has been chopped from its overall length - our spies believe that these prototypes ride on either a brand-new chassis or on modified Yaris underpinnings. Under the skin, we expect the Prius C to use a 1.5-liter hybrid powertrain, or perhaps a version of the 1.8-liter unit found in the larger Prius.

Regardless, Toyota has long said that the Prius C will be the most efficient non-plug-in hybrid on the market when it launches next year, with prices expected to fall around the $20,000 mark. Get ready, Honda Insight and CR-Z. This one's coming right for you.

Toyota USA gains increased design control

2011 toyota tundra

The product development cycle at Toyota can be frustrating. More specifically, the process can be frustrating for North American executives who don't have total control over vehicles specifically marketed to their country. Engineers, developers and executives all have a say, but the final decisions have been made in Japan. Until now.

According to a report from Automotive News, Toyota has changed its product development process for North American vehicles. An example of such a vehicle is the Toyota Tundra. That pickup caters to the desires and needs of the U.S. car-buying public, and now Toyota USA will be given the leeway needed to make sure it meets those desires and needs.

The Japanese automaker says it has always listened to its U.S. counterparts. However, the process was stifled due to the requirement that decisions be finalized in Japan. Now, this process can flow more freely. Expect to see the effects of this change beginning with the next generation of the Tundra.

Despite being big in Canada, Toyota Matrix future unsure

2011 Toyota Matrix
2011 Toyota Matrix - Click above for high-res image gallery

Toyota may not invest in a next-generation version of the company's Matrix when the 2013 Corolla arrives. According to Ward's Auto, the hatchback's sales have fallen off of a cliff, with just 14,592 deliveries last year. That's down from a height of 66,836 units in 2002. But that's just here in the typically hatch-averse United States. In Canada, the Matrix is still kicking in teeth, though the Corolla still outsells its long-roof twin by more than twice the volume.

While there's been some speculation that the upcoming compact Prius variant will supplant the Matrix in the Toyota family tree, Bob Carter, Toyota's Group Vice President and General Manager, says that the two vehicles are expected to appeal to vastly different audiences.

Still, we have to think that Toyota would be wise to invest a little coin in the aging Matrix when the Corolla gets a revamp in a few years. American buyers seem to be slowly warming to the idea of hatches and wagons, and competitors from Hyundai to Ford are all offering five-door variants. As Ward's Auto points out, 43 percent of 2012 Focus sales have been hatchbacks to date.
